The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) has been established by the Government of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi as an Autonomous Super-speciality Institute, under the Societies Registration Act – 1860, New Delhi. The Institute of Liver & Biliary Sciences has been granted Deemed-to-be-University status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 under the de-novo category through the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.   ILBS is a ‘de-novo institute with a promise for excellence’ in Hepatobiliary Medicine, Surgery, and Research and is a unique institute that is dedicated to patient management, teaching, and research. The institute and its vision were conceived by eminent academicians and visionaries to provide world-class training and teaching, including excellent patient care and cutting-edge research for curing liver and biliary diseases. All activities of the university have been directed towards this vision.

The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences is unique in nurturing a vibrant research culture in a clinical setting to bridge the gap between the bench and bedside. To fully understand the diseases that affect the “hepato-pancreato-billiary highway” it is imperative to have cutting-edge technologies established at the institute in order to test hypotheses and implement ideas in a multi-disciplinary format.

Team And Specialties

  • ILBS is a dedicated center for advanced training and research in the area of hepatobiliary sciences.
  • They had performed a total of 655 liver transplants till date for both adults and Pediatric out of which about 15% of live donor liver transplants are emergency surgeries that are very unique and rare by international standards for major organ programs.
  • ILBS provides emergency care to patients with all types of liver diseases, presenting in critical condition.
  • ILBS team is well prepared to manage serious patients presenting with Acute Liver Failure (ALF) suitable for emergency transplant surgeries.
  • They have the best facility across the world bringing together an outstanding pool of doctors, multidisciplinary investigation, scientists, and clinical researchers to foster collaboration, inspiring new ideas and discovering new technologies, and translating scientific advances more swiftly into new ways of diagnosing and treating patients and preventing diseases.
  • ILBS is the only center under the aegis of the Delhi Government to have an active liver transplant program, which began in 2010. They have a very capable team that treats and supports adult and pediatric patients with end-stage liver disease.


  • ILBS has 180 fully functional beds in its first phase,74 of which cater as intensive care (ICU) beds.
  • In its second phase, it has 234 fully functional complement beds, which includes 62 general ward beds, 10 super economy beds, 36 semi-private beds, 27 private rooms, 10 deluxe rooms, 22 pediatric ward, 4 VIP suites, 20 Liver coma ICU beds, 2 Liver Coma isolation beds, 15 Surgical ICU Beds, 5 liver transplant ICU beds, 3 oncology, and 18 HDU beds).
  • Additionally, they have 87 non-complement beds (10 Dialysis beds; 57 Daycare beds), 15 ER beds, and 5 Postoperative beds.
  • The institute has six fully equipped state-of-the-art modular operating rooms (OR). Two ORs are dedicated to liver and renal transplant surgery and four ORs are for other surgical procedures.
  • Their emergency services are functional 24×7, round the clock on all days. The emergency block is fully equipped with advanced monitoring and resuscitation types of equipment.
  • ILBS is well equipped for handling transportation of sick patients with two basic and one advanced life support ambulances, which are equipped with an oxygen cylinder, and emergency medications and supplies. The advanced “Liver Ambulance Service”, an ALS facility, is available for critically ill patients, and the management of such patients is undertaken during the process of transfer to ILBS.
  • The Institute has daycare facilities that provide services to patients for short-stay procedures like diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, ERCP, biliary stenting, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), Endoscopic Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL), etc. The services are operational from 8 am to 8 pm.
  • The Institute has eight endoscopy suites for undertaking various endoscopic procedures namely UGI endoscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, capsule endoscopy, ESWL, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound, single and double-balloon enteroscopy, bronchoscopy, Liver biopsy, Hepatic Venous Pressure Gradient (HVPG), and Trans Jugular Liver Biopsy (TJLB).
  • It has a cafeteria and provides accommodation facilities for attendants or patient visitors.
  • ILBS offers training programs for super-specialties related to Hepato-Biliary and Pancreatic Sciences through the Post-Doctoral 3-year courses: DM in Hepatology, Paediatric Hepatology, Organ Transplant Anaesthesia, and Critical Care; and M.Ch. in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery.
  • It has expertly planned and well-equipped sections, including a spacious OPD area and comfortable patient rooms.
