How to be safe from COVID-19

While the number of covid-19 cases is increasing and the governments are desperately working to find out cures and vaccines, here are some essential tips and precautions that can keep you, your family, and your community safe.

7 Precautions against COVID-19:

  1. Social/Physical Distancing: To reduce your risk of infection, maintain a physical distance of at least 6 feet between yourself and others and an even greater distance when indoors. Germs spread out when we cough, sneeze or speak. The further away, the better.
  2. Mask Mandatory: To make masks effective, you must store and clean or dispose of them appropriately. WHO’s advice on how to wear a mask :
    1. Clean your hands before you put your mask on, as well as before and after you take it off, and after you touch it at any time.
    2. Make sure it covers both your nose, mouth, and chin.
    3. When you take off a mask, store it in a clean plastic bag, and every day either wash it if it’s a fabric mask or dispose of a medical mask in a trash bin.
    4. Don’t use masks with valves.
  3. Clean your hands regularly and thoroughly with an alcohol-based hand rub (20-30 seconds) or wash them with soap and water (30-40 seconds). This eliminates germs, including viruses that may be on your hands.
  4. Do not touch your eyes, nose, and mouth. Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose, or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and infect you.
  5. Cough or sneeze cover in your bent elbow or tissue. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately into a closed bin and wash your hands. By following good ‘respiratory hygiene,’ you protect the people around you from viruses, which cause colds, flu, and COVID-19.
  6. Clean and disinfect surfaces frequently, especially those regularly touched, such as door handles, faucets, and phone screens.
  7. Make your environment safer: Avoid the 3Cs: spaces that are closed, crowded, or involve close contact, but if you can’t, then take precautions:
    1. Wear a mask (see above for more details).
    2. Meet people outside. Outdoor gatherings are safer than indoor ones, particularly if indoor spaces are small and without natural ventilation or outdoor air coming in.
    3. Open doors and windows. When indoors, increase the amount of ‘natural ventilation.’ For air-conditioning, the guidelines state that the temperature setting of all air conditioning devices should be in the range of 24-300 C, relative humidity should be in the range of 40-70%, intake of fresh air should be as much as possible, and cross ventilation should be adequate. The air handling unit needs to be cleaned before switching on.

Do it all! And if you are still unwell, know the full range of symptoms of COVID-19 (link to symptoms blog post). The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, dry cough, and tiredness. Other symptoms that are less common and may affect some patients include loss of taste or smell, aches, pains, headaches, sore throat, nasal congestion, red eyes, diarrhea, or a skin rash. Even if you have minor symptoms such as cough, headache, mild fever, stay home, and self-isolate until you recover. Have someone bring you supplies. If you need to leave your house or have someone near you, wear a medical mask to avoid infecting others. Call your health care provider or hotline for advice. If you have a fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately. Call by telephone first, if you can, and follow the directions of your local health authority.
