Lasik Surgery

Are you tired of blurriness and the search for glasses every morning you get up? People with spectacles or lenses deal with ample issues like squished objects, headache, double vision, motion sickness, reflective glare, blurriness or night glare, in daily life. If you are one of them, you probably have a way out with this refractive surgery that may eradicate the need for glasses or lenses. LASIK eye surgery is an age-limited operation, older people might face an issue.

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most commonly performed refractive surgery. Normal vision is when the cornea refracts or bends light precisely at the back of the eye, onto the retina. But in the case of near-sightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) or astigmatism, the cornea bends the light incorrectly, resulting in blurred vision. To resolve this problem of refraction, this surgery uses a special type of cutting laser to change the shape of the dome-shaped clear tissue in front of the eye quite precisely.

How is it performed?

First comes the step of designing a very thin, superficial flap in the cornea with surgical tools like microkeratome or with a femtosecond laser. The adjoined flap is to be folded back to access the underlying cornea known as stroma and some corneal tissues are to be separated using an excimer laser. Excimer lasers generate a cool ultraviolet light beam to extract microscopic amounts of tissues from the cornea to remould it; as a result, the light that enters the eye should focus more accurately on the retina. The cornea is flattened in the case of near-sighted people, whereas with farsighted people, a steeper cornea, is the goal. After the procedure, the flap is laid back in place, filling the area from where the corneal tissue was taken out. Flaps produced during LASIK are not secured immediately, so while they mend, patients should not rub their eyes.

In general, the recovery period from LASIK surgery is six to twelve hours, however, depending on multiple factors, it might vary from patient to patient. In the first 24 hours after the surgery, resting your eyes and monitoring your symptoms is required. After vision correction, most people see clearly within 24 hours, while some require two to five days to heal.

Signs you may experience immediately after the surgery:

  • Discomfort in the eye
  • Dryness in the eye
  • Irritation in the eye
  • Blurry or foggy vision
  • Witnessing streaks, glares, starbursts or halos,
  • Sensitivity to light

  • It is convenient and speedy. To calm down the recipient, who remains awake, the doctors might provide Valium.
  • The laser is programmed to shut off, for safety, if the eye of the patient makes any unexpected movements that could prompt error or injury.
  • The recipient can notice the results without any delay. It will hardly take an hour for LASIK patients to witness the difference in their vision.
  • No need to carry lenses or glasses everywhere! The patient may be able to enjoy their rest of the life without worrying about the vision.
  • It is absolutely painless, plus no bandages or stitches are required.

  • In rare cases, recipients might suffer from dry eyes for up to three months. Other uncommon drawbacks; night-time glare or halos.
  • Regression is when the corrected vision gradually moves back towards your original prescription. However, this complication is not so common.
  • Under Corrections- the correction wouldn’t be up to mark if the laser removes too less tissues from the eye. It is common for people who are near-sighted, although, these another surgery within a year to remove more tissues from the eye is helpful.
  • Over Corrections- there are possibilities that the laser might take out more tissues than required.
  • People might suffer from astigmatism, which is caused by unequal tissue removal. Hence, astigmatic people might end up having an additional surgery.
