Overview

ASD (Atrial Septal Defect): A hole in the septum between the heart’s two upper chambers is called ASD.

VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect): A hole in the septum between the heart’s two lower chambers is called VSD.

ASDs and VSDs allow blood to pass from the left side of the heart to the right side.

These holes typically cause left-to-right shunting of blood, which means that some blood that has already picked up oxygen from the lungs goes through the hole and back to the lungs. Shunting is inefficient, and the extra blood flow to the lungs can cause symptoms.

Surgical treatment for ASD and VSD is open-heart surgery.

Symptoms

  • Infants and children with ASD usually have no symptoms.
  • In early adulthood or middle age, untreated ASD can lead to a stroke or high blood pressure in the lungs (pulmonary hypertension).
  • Fatigue
  • Swelling of legs, feet, and abdomen
  • In VSD, small holes (ventricles) don’t show any symptoms.
  • Larger holes (ventricles) cause symptoms early in life when an infant is between 6 and 8 weeks of age.
  • Symptoms include:
  • Rapid breathing
  • Difficulty in feeding
  • Sweating while eating
  • Slow weight gain
  • Untreated VSD may cause recurrent lung infections and increased blood pressure in the lung blood vessels (pulmonary hypertension), that eventually becomes permanent and shorten life span.
