Overview

ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) is a procedure that combines the use of gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy and X-RAY to diagnose and treat certain problems of, the Gallbladder, the pancreatic duct, first portion of the small intestine (duodenum), and Bile ducts.

Symptoms

ERCP is used for treatment when bile duct or pancreatic ducts have become narrowed or blocked because of:

  • Gallstones, trapped in the main bile duct
  • Infection
  • Blockage of the bile duct, the symptom of which is yellow jaundiced skin and dark urine.
  • Cancer of the bile duct or pancreas
  • Acute and chronic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Trauma or surgical complications in the bile or pancreatic ducts
  • Pancreatic Pseudocysts
