Overview

Intestine transplant is also known as short bowel transplant. It is the surgical replacement of the small intestine for chronic and acute cases of intestine failure.

There are three types of Intestine transplant procedure:

Small bowel transplant only: This transplant procedure is recommended for people with bowel failure who do not have liver disease.

Combined liver and small bowel transplant: This procedure is recommended for people with bowel failure and also have advanced liver disease.

Multiple organ (multi-visceral) transplant: This may be recommended for people with multiple organ failure and involves transplanting the stomach, pancreas, duodenum (the first section of the small bowel), liver, and small bowel.

This procedure is not most often performed.

Symptoms

  • When a person suffers from Bowel or intestinal failure (a person’s bowel is not able to absorb enough nutrients from food), requires an intestine transplant.
  • Short bowel syndrome (a large part of the small bowel is missing, removed, or damage).
  • Chronic liver disease and bowel failure
