Overview

Thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or a part of the thyroid gland.

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ composed of two cone-like lobes or wings connected via isthmus, located at the base of the neck. The gland regulates metabolism by secreting hormones. When diseases affect the thyroid gland, its size or activity may become abnormal.

Thyroidectomy is a procedure performed to treat thyroid disorders, such as thyroid cancer, a non-cancerous enlargement of the thyroid (goiter), an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), or multi-nodular goiter.

Types of thyroidectomy:

  • Hemithyroidectomy-in this, the entire isthmus is removed along with one lobe. This procedure is performed in the benign disease of one lobe.
  • Subtotal thyroidectomy-removal of the majority of both lobes leaving behind 4-5 grams of thyroid tissues on or both sides. This is used to be the most common operation for multinodular goiter.
  • Partial thyroidectomy- removal of the gland in front of the trachea after mobilization. Done in nontoxic MNG.
  • Near-total thyroidectomy-both lobes are removed except for a small amount of thyroid tissue in the vicinity of the recurrent laryngeal nerve entry point and the superior parathyroid gland.
  • Total thyroidectomy-entire gland is removed. Done in the case of papillary or follicular carcinoma of the thyroid, medullary carcinoma of the thyroid. This is the most common operation for multinodular goiter.
